A GOOD BIRD WATCHING DAY

Yesterday (Jan. 25) we had a fine winter day with a high of 4 C and clear.  What better thing to do than to do a little bird watching.

At 4 above C it's reasonable to use field glasses and cameras.

I had put this on my bird watching call list Fri. night so had 2 people show up to go with me. I also persuaded the Micro Manager that it would be very good for her to go with me. She enjoyed herself.

One of my favorite winter birding sites is Mackenzie Trails. It's an area of old growth forest. It has never been logged. It's a mixture of aspen and spruce. We are fortunate to have this right inside the city.

Here the birds we will see in the winter is quite predictable. So yesterday we saw: black-capped chickadees, red-breasted nuthatch, white breasted nuthatch, pine siskin, common raven, downy woodpecker, hairy woodpecker, woodpecker and a blue jay. Possible sightings could have been: boreal chickadee, black-backed wood pecker, great horned owl, brown creeper.

               A look toward the forest.

I can't understand why birders would go the wrong way. But this shows the dense forest.

I look at a bit of a clearing caused by a viscous wind storm five years ago.

Bird nests are easy to find in winter when the leaves are gone.

  1. It must be a relief to get out after such cold weather recently. The fresh air alone is wonderful; add birds and good company to that and it's a good day

  2. Oh darn! I just wrote a long comment and pressed Publish and it disappeared. I forgot to use Chrome for my browser and was doing it on Safari. Anyway...
I was just saying that your Micro Manager is a good sport to go out with you into the wilderness on a cold, snowy day. I have a hard time telling the birds apart. I do know the birds in Hawaii (sort of though): Mynahs, Mourning doves, sparrows, tons of finches, bulbuls, egrets, koleas, hummm,... I guess that’s all I see all the time.

    1. Well it was a nice day for us. I remember bird watching in Hawaii. They are all different.

  3. Every once in a while I bring a bird nest home to tuck away and look at as I pass. No reasonable explanation, except I am s impressed with the engineering by mouth!

    1. One also wonders how such a fragile structure can stay together.

    1. The woodpeckers certainly like the very old trees.

  5. I suspect that wind was vicious and not viscous, Red! Great day for birding as you mention.

  6. I'm amazed you have ANY birds at this time of year, given how cold it gets there!

  7. It would be easy to overdress in winter at 4C. I made that mistake one day when it was colder than that.

  8. What a great post. I seem to watch birds more in the summer when we live in Colorado. I have a bird book and check off the ones as I see them. I love it when I spot a colorful Western Tanager.

    1. Tanagers are very showy. Think about getting an app on your phone for bird identification.

  11. Looks a lovely place to go bird watching. It is so cool that you saw all those birds, and most especially a pileated woodpecker. Haven't seen one of those in many, many years.

    1. There seem to be quite a few pileateds here compared to 30 years ago.
