A SURPRISE

Sometimes small unexpected things surprise me. Maybe it's not so much surprise but something I hadn't thought about.

This morning we went to look at another seniors living facility. We've been looking at places for the last three months. No, we're not moving. Looking , just in case.

No doubt about it the people who show you around are sales people. The more they know about you , the more successful their pitch can be.

So they want to know what some of my interests are. I told him I blogged. He seemed surprised. He said, "I've never met anybody who writes a blog.

I was surprised. I guess if you're in the blog world you think blogging is common. I talk to my friends about my blog and they know about writing blogs. They read me sometimes and are quick to make a comment.

I also look at blogs and see that they have many followers. Some blogs have thousands of followers.

So I was a little surprised to meet someone who wasn't very familiar with blogging.

Do you find that people are familiar with blogging?

  1. Well gee Mr Red, I don't think that facility's "salesperson" knows much about folks of any age. The place may not have a computer room like some facilities. Watch out for the "extra" fees they don't tell you about on such tours. I've had several hospice patients in them, where their "extra" fees add up to double the rent. If they were helped to or from the bathroom, shower, or had meals brought to their room, there was a charge each time. Keep on blogging! Linda in Kansas

    1. Yes, I've heard of those charges. They are all different.

  2. No, I do not find people are familiar with blogging, but maybe (like me) they are trying to stay anonymous in their small home town! Most of the people I know who are on any social media platform are on Facebook. From the limited amount I have read Facebook it seems to be more like "small talk" as opposed to a deeper conversation. But not all blogs are a deeper conversation either. They vary widely. I also get the impression that blogs are more common among older people, whereas the younger ones are on Instagram and TikTok. And plenty of people are still not on ANY social media. Maybe that's the case with the man you met.

    1. You make some really good points. to write a blog you have to want to say more about a topic. You can't say much on twitter.

  3. Many of the people I see do not seem to be very familiar with blogging. Some of the ones that are familiar with blogs don't realize that many "regular people" like us blog. I guess they just see the more professional blogs.

    1. I stay away from those professional blogs. I like the personal interactions and ideas that people have.

  4. My friends mostly know about my blog but have no interest in reading it. When I started blogging, I had a group of readers who became friends but as they stopped writing, they also stopped reading. My only readers now are other bloggers and my mum

    1. Things do change in the blog world. It is a challenge to continue blogging for a long period of time. I go through my followers and if someone hasn't been active, I take them off my list. I've weeded out some very good blogs that have ceased operation.

  5. I wish that the person who owns a gambling company in Indonesia and leaves spam comments had never heard of blogs!

  7. I don't think many people inhabit our space or know people who do. We are arcane outliers.

  11. Most of my friends know that I have a blog. A few read it. But nobody understands why I spend time posting notes to the virtual universe.

    1. You make a good point that people don't really understand why. Most people don't like to write to express themselves.

  12. I don't know anyone who doesn't know about blogs. He's not computer savy maybe or just clueless. :)

  14. I don't often talk about it, to be honest. That's an interesting question. I think it is probably not nearly as common as it was even 10 years ago. I think maybe a lot of people drifted to social media. But there are an awful lot of computer literate people in your age group. That sales person may not know as much about his target audience as he thinks he does!

    2. You know what, Red? I was thinking about your question today while I scraped wallpaper. I think of all the bloggers that I know that have simply stopped blogging. Two were writing books. Others went to social media. The reason that all of them gave was the same. Blogging was taking too much of their time.

  15. I am not sure how many people actually read blogs. If you're not a blogger yourself, I don't think the world actually exists for them. :-)

  16. I think there are quite a few people who don't know about blogs. People I know know about my blog, but most only read it because I link it to Facebook so they can find it. Most do not comment, so I don't really know who reads it. I am grateful for my blog family that actively participates in writing, reading, and commenting.

  17. You must have a head made almost entirely from bone if you haven't heard of blogging. I agree with Debby that social media like Twitter and Facebook occupy a lot of territory that once belonged to blogging.

  19. I think as there are fewer and fewer of we old people there are more and more who know little to nothing about blogging. It's not instant enough for younger folk.

  20. I've never talked to anyone around these parts , other than my daughter, who knows what a blog is. Seriously!

  21. I have met people who just don't have a clue what a blog is. I guess they just don't know the right people or they don't do much on the computer.

  22. How old was this person? I think blogging is rather alien to some younger people, who stick mostly to short-form sites like Twitter and Facebook.

  23. None of my family or friends knew about blogging. I have a few who come and visit every now and again since they know about mine, but they rarely comment.

  24. A lot of people I know aren't familiar with blogging. I guess it's just not their thing.

  25. Nobody I know blogs and when I mention blogging they either give me a blank look or they look scared. They never follow up the conversation. Mostly they are on Facebook though and I'm not.

  26. I know a lot of people who are familiar with blogging but don't blog themselves. I do have a bunch of friends and relatives who read my blog but don't comment. I wish they would so I'd at least get feedback.

Senior care facilities are really, really expensive here in Hawaii. It almost makes me think we should move when the time comes.
