LOUD MOUTHS

I have ranted on this topic before. Maybe I've ranted too many times.

I just hate to see the loudest brainless people get wall to wall coverage in the press. Everybody picks on Trump as getting too much mileage from his outlandish behavior and comments.  Recently, he's been making about half the items in a news feed I follow. As more lawsuits pile up and outlandish comments are made the press coverage is more and at a feverish pitch.

I'm tired of hearing all these news items.

Recently a new premier was chosen in my province, Alberta. She was chosen by members of her party.

She campaigned on some extreme right wing policies. Now that she has got started , she's come up with some pretty wacky ideas.

She sees our federal government as the evil of all evils. She's got a proposed piece of legislation that will allow our province to pick and choose what laws we will abide by and those we will not obey.   These rules have been in effect since the beginning of our country. Yes, they change and adapt as the years go by. So she wants to take everything she can from the federal system and not contribute to that system. Of course she has enough warped logic to make this sound good.

But, she is  mouthpiece and is getting lots of press.

I'm not saying these people should not get any press. We have to know people's ideas if they have any. We have to know what is correct  so that we can make decisions about what to support.

Okay, I'm not going to ask you for a solution. There is a solution but it'll never happen.

The press today is to make money. The press puts out what makes the most money for them. So they've found out that outlandish things get good ratings.

So I guess I'll have to rant once in a while about what I think is  major problem.

I don't think I'll post the next rant!

  1. It is a major problem, Red. Here it is decidedly worse because we've got the loony-tooners spouting off everywhere. Do we need to know what they are saying? Sure, But it needs to be balanced with an opposing view as to why it makes no damned sense. Or why it is an outright lie. Or why it is simply wrong. When it is simply reported with no balance, people seem to suck that garbage up like little hoovers.

Oh dear. Am I ranting now?

  3. Hello,
I think they should give the loony tuners less press time. Have a great day and happy new week!

  4. I read news in the morning and spend the rest of the day in peace without it. It is too frustrating and upsetting to be plugged in all the time.

Your new premier is really something!

  5. It sure has changed politics, the trumpers, the whackos. Then, the media who rely on bait clicks for web traffic. I hear you!

  7. You know the old saying: If you want to draw a crowd, start an argument. And that's what the press does to juice its audience. We have to resist the temptation to click on those headlines.

    1. We do need information but it should be balanced. Both sides get a say.

  9. I know what you mean, Red. The weird loudmouths get the attention but looking back, it has often been this way. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" as they say.
I just turn it off. I listen to the people that have some common sensible things to say and I ignore the crazies as much as I can.

  10. I think the 24/7 news cycle killed journalism and has unleashed this monstrous game-show that is current politics everywhere. It takes a lot of lunacy to fill all the time and pages with stories stories stories. In the US we have a former-president monster who spoke yesterday of undoing our Constitution. It made the headlines. He's famous. Maybe he'll even run for president again. Ugh. (NewRobin13)

  11. Over at Wikipedia I read that Danielle Smith has lied blatantly about her family origins in order to curry extra favour. If she can lie about her family what else might she lie about?
"Keith Kline for Premier! You know he makes sense!"

  12. In complete agreement with you, Red. I'm so weary of the hyped "news" which has little regard for accuracy and balanced reporting as Debby wrote above. The media click bait mindset is troublesome, bordering on dangerous in many instances, and to be resisted as Tom said. And depressingly yes, NewRobin13, the 24/7 news cycle has killed legitimate journalism.

  17. Those of you in Canada and also in England, have made me feel better about us Americans and our Trump problem. To me, all this is a sign of something even larger than Trump or your new premier. I think it is a sign that we are racing to the extremes, both sides. At some point I hope we all realize that longevity as a civilization lies in finding the common ground in the middle.

  19. Good points, Red. I agree. The thing I find most distressing is how many people agree with these weirdo leaders. I guess they wouldn't get voted in unless that was the case. I have relatives living in Alberta who are lining up behind the weirdos. It makes me sad.

  20. I don't think the press is to blame. Honestly, they just report what's going on. I worked in media for 30 years and I can tell you we never thought, "Oh, let's run that story -- it will make a lot of money!"

The question is, why do voters want to listen to these lunatics? Why do they have any appeal at all? THAT's what's troubling.

  21. Actually, I enjoy your rants. Quite often, I find I’m in complete agreement with you. So, my vote is to keep posting the rants!

  22. It's all about making money these days. Whatever sells and gets a rise out of people gets reported. Whatever happened to journalistic integrity?

  23. Yup! I agree with you 100% Also. There's news and then there's FOX news over here. FOX is all about right wing entertainment and filled with Trump sycophants.

I'm sorry to hear you have this same problem in Canada too.
