Yesterday I gave you our dismal weather forecast for the next seven days. So today was our first day of a long cold spell. We had about 5 cm of snow overnight with lots of wind.
So when I went out to shovel today, there was no snow in some places and 20 cm in other places. The wind had drifted the snow into snow banks.
So at minus 17 C I shoveled my sidewalks and driveway. And then I shoveled sidewalks for two neighbors. Then I cleaned out the paths to various things around my yard.
Okay, you have to dress for the cold. First I found my "long johns". These are long legged underwear that go down to your ankles and then your socks fit over the bottom cuffs . Then I found my vest and fleece . Then my jacket went over these. So I dressed properly for the cold and I wasn't cold.
Pictures? No way. I don't like using a camera when it's this cold. My fingers soon get very cold and the battery seems to die very quickly when it's cold.
Tomorrow is going to be colder!
Long johns - my dad used to wear them all year when he got older. My mum always called them his passion killers. Keep warm -plenty of good hot drinks.
ReplyDeleteI keep warm. Dress in layers.
DeleteHere in England, people's heating systems might occasionally break down in wintertime. Over there during very cold snaps in Alberta, the break down of a heating system could be life threatening. Sometimes I wonder how exactly Canada's native Arctic peoples made it through winter century upon century. They must have been VERY SMART.
ReplyDeleteThe aboriginals had a technology that worked well. The white guys came along and thought they'd help them but ended up destroying them.
DeleteDefinitely dress in layers time.
ReplyDeleteI had the layer system drilled into me a long time ago.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteToo bad the wind does not blow all the snow away. You are nice to help your neighbors, shoveling their sidewalks. Take care and stay warm. Have a great day and happy new week!
It would be a terrible wind to blow the snow away. we know how to live with snow and cold.
DeleteYou’ve sent me to the Esther site again, and I see that the 140day forecast is not too cold. For now, I have it set to default to Fahrenheit where that 23, for example, seem so much nicer and 23C. 🥸
ReplyDeleteI only do Celcius.
DeleteWhoopsie. Ignore that first comment. I didn't mean to hit publish.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the cold. I really warm up shoveling, too. Keep warm. Good for you for helping others. I had an offer to help with the branches, but I feel funny about it.
There's been quite a bit of sharing this year.
DeleteYou must be everyone's favorite neighbor, Red! Shoveling for them is so nice of you. You have lots of energy!
ReplyDeleteI am lucky that my oldest son lives with me and he loves to shovel!
I have good neighbors. Sometimes my sidewalks are cleaned and I have no idea who was out there.
DeleteSoon it will be Winter Solstice, and then the sun will return. I hope your temps start to get higher everyday. Take care there.
ReplyDeleteIt takes until the end of Feb. before we get much moderation.
DeleteLooks like this could be one for the record books. Take care and stay warm.
ReplyDeleteWe aren't setting any records but it could be a long one.
DeleteUgh. Stay inside!
ReplyDeleteIf you're dressed in layers, it's not too bad to be outside.
DeleteThat;s nice that you did shoveling for your two neighbors. Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteIf you dress in layers and keep moving you stay warm.
DeleteYou are much colder than us but after while it is all miserable. Our 7° F. this morning was a shock and one can tell the house furnace is working harder for sure.
ReplyDeleteMy camera battery is the same when it’s cold here. I take fewer photos in the cold for sure.
ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine that kind of cold but I understand you not wanting to take pictures!
ReplyDeleteStay warm :)
It got colder here too, but not THAT cold!
ReplyDeleteThat is cold! Stay warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteEEEEEEKKK. And you shoveled your neighbors out.
ReplyDeleteI will dress for the cold here, too, since we got it all the way into the deep Pacific Northwest. Brrrr!
ReplyDeleteWe had a dusting of snow overnight. That's OK; I must go out tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI think you are quite damp and that makes things feel much colder.
ReplyDeleteGood grief! You shoveled when it was THAT cold!!!
