Today I received a pin in the mail from the University of Saskatchewan acknowledging my graduation fifty years ago. It seems like yesterday that I was still taking courses.
Most of my university courses were taken in summer school. Teachers would spend their summer taking a course and then teach to make a living.
I had to take one year on campus in order to graduate. I took my one year and did not participate in any University activities. For many students , they were heavily involved in university activities.
So today when I got my pin acknowledging 50 years I do not have the great memories other students had as they participated in many activities.
Now I finished another degree in 1968 . No celebration for that degree. I did attend the convocation for my 1968 degree. I skipped the convocation for the 1974 degree.
So the pin does bring back some memories.
No photos as I thought I had fixed my camera. I discovered that the card was not working so I'll have to get another card.
Well, I think that we should have a celebration for you right here on the blog. I'll bring a cake!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a deal!
DeleteWow! That's wonderful! You need to take a photo with the pin now for your children. :-) I'm sorry you weren't able to take part in any of the ceremonies. My son didn't want to take part in graduation ceremonies when he got his bachelors but acquiesced and did it as a Mother's Day gift for me. I'll bet he's glad he did now. Granted he didn't do it when he got his Masters which I would have loved to have seen. Darn! So... like I said. It would be nice to take a photo with the pin (and diploma?) for the kids.
ReplyDeleteI chose not to attend convocation but I went to my daughter's convocation and loved every minute of it.
DeleteWell, at least a camera card is an easy purchase. How cool that your university sent you a pin! I doubt I'll get one if and when the time comes. I'm not sure my university even knows I exist -- which is fine, because otherwise they'd be asking for money. :)
ReplyDeleteFund raising is a biggie and I'm sure that this is what it all about. They know that we are up in years and they want us to remember them in estate planning,
DeleteIs there a statue of you at the University of Saskatchewan? Fifty years since you graduated - wow!
ReplyDeleteNo statue yet!
Delete50 years, it is nice they send out the pins. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised as the other degree 50 years went by with no notice.
DeleteI graduated in ‘74 as well. It doesn’t feel all that long ago somehow!
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether it's tough to look back or just tough to look at ourselves now.
DeleteI have much fonder memories of uni than high school.
ReplyDeleteI only attended one year and didn't participate in any activities so there were no memories.
DeleteCongratulations on your fifty years anniversary!
ReplyDeletethanks. It went by in a hurry.
DeleteWell, congratulations on your 50th anniversary of your degree, Red! That was a fine achievement for you. Thank you for all your years of serving as a teacher!
ReplyDeleteThankyou. I did enjoy the teaching part of it.
DeleteRed, Congratulations on your 50 year pin. It makes me wonder why my university doesn’t present pins for accomplishing something. They definitely keep in touch asking for contributions. Out here, we will all be hoping you get a new card for your camera soon as we enjoy the photos you share. Have a good weekend and say HI to the MM. John
ReplyDeleteI think the pin is a way to soften up seniors so that they will part with some of their money to the university. I got a new card today so I'm back in business.
DeleteCongrats on your 50th anniversary, Red.
ReplyDeleteThankyou. It goes by in a hurry.
DeleteCongratulations on your 50Th anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThankyou. For a minute I thought I was 50 years old!!!!
DeleteI had no idea universities made that kind of effort! It must be nice to have that reminder. Studying at night is hard work and harder if you're a parent. You did the hard yards then and your curiosity for the world is still obvious. It's a great quality to have!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. Well done.
ReplyDeleteNext year will be the 65th year since my undergraduate degree. 55 years since my graduate degree. The only ceremony I attended was the first. Two other degrees and I told them to mail the parchment.
I think there's method in their madness and it's just another fund raising gimmick. You make a good point about curiosity about the world and also a better understanding of what you learn.
ReplyDeleteThat is a milestone!
ReplyDeleteuniversities activities can be maddening as our younger son seems exhausted sometimes still he don't want to skip any because he likes to participate
ReplyDeletei can understand how feels on receiving pin when you had not participated in the activates
